On November 10th, hedgehogs celebrate their holiday. These small mammals have been living on our planet for 60 million years, but now, without our help, they may become extinct within a few decades. That’s why it’s essential to talk about hedgehogs and share knowledge about them, not just on this day. We propose an outdoor activity where we will familiarize children with the concept of hedgehog hibernation and get to know different species of leaves.
Materials
- dry branches (thin and thick for construction)
- dry leaves
- dry grass
Execution of the task
We tell the children that hedgehogs go into hibernation, so they need a warm and safe shelter. While raking leaves in the garden, we can leave piles in different places, but we can also prepare a more solid structure. To build the hedgehog house, let’s choose a dry spot in the garden, preferably on a small hill. It should also be a place away from noise. The mound should be quite large, about 1 meter high, to serve its purpose.
Step 1. We build the skeleton with branches. For this, we need small branches that we stick into the ground to create something like a tunnel.
Step 2. We cover our construction with dry grass.
Step 3. We make a layer of dry leaves. In the process, we can take a closer look with the children at the shapes of different leaves and try to match them to the species of trees.
Step 4. We again stick larger branches into the ground to secure the entire structure. We also arrange small branches on top.
The hedgehog house is ready!
