Madeira – a trip to the primeval forests

Kobieta w lesie na Maderze. Wokół drzewa i ogromne liście paproci

Did you know that… millions of years ago Madeira was almost entirely covered by lush forests?

Nowadays, only ecosystems called Macaronesian laurel forests – Laurissilva remain. Their area accounts for about 20% of the island’s surface. Fortunately, it is under protection.

Thickets of lianas, ferns, mosses, and lichens are perfect habitats for animals, birds, and insects. Few mammals live on the island, but it is home to over 40 species of birds and approximately 700 species of insects. Fortunately, there are no snakes.

Learn with us to recognize the sounds of some wild residents of the island!
